A conviction for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol (DUI) is a serious one that will have a major impact on a wide variety of aspects in your life well into the future. Below are some of the ramifications of a DUI.
- Loss of Freedom– A first offense DUI conviction results in your driver’s license being suspended for one year. During that time, you will have to rely on public transportation or the generosity of others to get anywhere you need to go, from your job to the grocery store. However, there is a possibility of getting the court to approve driving restrictions such as only being allowed to drive to and from work.
- Employment Issues– Depending on your company’s policies, a DUI conviction could result in you losing your job. At the very least, the related court dates, community service hours, and/or jail time related to your case will cause you to use a great deal of leave, which could put you in a tenuous position with your company. Furthermore, when applying for any future job, you will be required to report your DUI conviction, which may completely disqualify you for the position in the eyes of some employers.
- Education– A DUI conviction can hold you back from being admitted to many colleges and universities. If you are a current college student, you may find your scholarships revoked and you could be dismissed from the institution on judicial grounds.
- Housing– Landlords often run criminal background checks on tenants before approving them. Having a DUI conviction on your record can mean your application for housing will be denied.
- Auto Insurance– Once you are allowed to drive again, you will find it challenging to find an auto insurance company who is willing to take you on as a customer as you will be considered extremely high risk. If an insurance company does accept your business, you are likely to pay double or triple your previous rates.
